This morning Microsoft announced following earlier tests that Gears of War 4 will now have a multiplayer mode that supports full cross-play between Xbox One and Windows 10 PC gamers. Cross-Play between PC’s and Consoles has been a much asked for feature in recent years as the hardware and game-play experiences have become increasingly similar.
In the case of Gears of War 4, the official tournament (Core & Competitive) modes with ranking will not support cross-play, to account for the often argued differences between controller game-play and keyboard/mouse game-play. Instead, it will be introduced as it’s own “Social Quickplay” mode separate from the official rankings.
I expect in the future, with games like Gears of War 4, and what we’ve already seen with cross-platform play with Rocket League, the gaps between PC and Console will continue to close. I personally bought my first PS3 Slim as my entry into modern console gaming mostly on the merits of it being the system my social network of friends had at the time, and not on the merits themselves of PC vs PS3 vs Xbox 360, at that point in time. Is this method of platform Cross-Play what your looking for in your games? Would it change your decision on your platform of choice?
News Release from Microsoft:
Late last year, we conducted a cross-play Test Weekend to bring our Windows 10 and Xbox One fans together in public Versus Multiplayer, combining fan feedback and extensive data gathering to help us decide the next steps to take to deliver a matchmaking cross-play Versus experience.
As such, beginning today, Social Quickplay will now be a Cross-play playlist! This step is planned to be a permanent move for the future of Social Quickplay, with the first few months being a ‘trial period’ in order to monitor player feedback alongside data to ensure the Test Weekend was representative.
Core and Competitive will remain platform independent, only matching Xbox players with each other and Windows 10 players with each other. Despite the closely matched performance between users on both platforms seen in our cross-play Test Weekend, we always want to ensure our Ranked experiences are as closely matched and competitive as possible. Due to the major popularity of Social Quickplay on Windows 10, we will be looking at introducing new Core and Competitive solutions for Windows 10 players in the future to provide more focused offerings to experience the more competitive ranked play of Gears of War 4.
